Dr. Carruth is an Assistant Professor at Geisinger studying the genetic and clinical factors that influence the development and progression of heritable cardiomyopathies. His research integrates genomic sequencing data, electronic health records, and advanced cardiac imaging to understand disease penetrance, variability in clinical outcomes, and opportunities for improved risk prediction.
Dr. Carruth received his PhD in Bioengineering from the University of California, San Diego, and leads a research program focused on genome-first approaches to cardiovascular disease. His NIH-funded work aims to identify modifiers of genetic risk and advance precision medicine strategies to improve the management of inherited heart disease. He is committed to interdisciplinary collaboration and mentoring trainees in translational genomics.
Dr. Van Syoc is a Staff Scientist in the Carruth group at Geisinger. She received her B.S. from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, M.S. from the University of Wyoming, and Ph.D. and postdoc from Penn State. In the Carruth group, Dr. Van Syoc tackles EHR phenotyping, genotype-phenotype association analyses, and grant and manuscript writing.
Dr. Winters is a Bioinformatics Staff Scientist at Geisinger. She received a B.A. in Biology from Reed College, Ph.D. in Human Genetics from the University of Maryland, Baltimore, and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at The Johns Hopkins University.
Mr. Nevius is a Research Project Manager I at Geisinger, where he assists in the design, regulatory implementation, and execution of both prospective and retrospective clinical research. His work primarily focuses on vascular, cardiovascular, and clinical genetics.
He earned his bachelor’s degree from the State University of New York at Cobleskill and has been with Geisinger for over a decade. His experience spans both clinical care and clinical research, providing him with a well-rounded perspective on the challenges and opportunities across healthcare settings.
